ELA assignments for 6-1

Hello again 6-1!

WEEKLY ASSIGNMENTS FOR ELA: Please aim to finish these items by the end of this week. I will not add anything further to this list in an effort to keep things simple and somewhat low-key. There will not be any other homework posted this week. You are all doing great work! Keep it up!

  • Daily reading time
  • Finish reading your lit. circles book!
  • For your last role #5, publish it to your blog (scroll down to see how – there is a blog post called lit. circles #4 from last week that explains everything)
  • You can comment on your group members’ blogs about their role (a star, a wish, a question)
  • Lit. circles response questions: you will find this in your booklet. Fill out section 6 (because it’s the end of the book) and write your answers in your ELA notebook. *Technology challenge for fun: As a practice run to post your work in Edsby, take a photo of your response questions and upload to our ELA class.

EXTRA OPTIONAL ASSIGNMENTS:

  • There are many ELA activities in your “J’ai fini” booklet. Go there and choose one or more!
  • ELA free writes: use your ELA notebook and write about anything you wish! A story, a poem, a journal entry about your day, a letter to me, anything you like!
  • Watch a musical of choice. I would highly recommend Mary Poppins or The Sound of Music 🙂 Relax and enjoy!
  • Listen to a podcast of choice

Les devoirs de français pour 6-1 et 6-2

FRENCH HOME READING: most of you took home French books from the class or the school library last week. Please add French reading time to your daily routine! This is very important! If you do not have French books at home, please see my older blog post from October (scroll down). There are many online resources listed there that you can use.

CONCOURS D’ART ORATOIRE: Students have worked very hard over the past 6 weeks preparing their French speeches. To share them with me and the other students, they will make a video of them delivering their speech and drop it into the shared OneDrive folder I have sent their way (check your student emails). The video MUST get dropped into that folder because I need them all in the same spot so other students can view them, not just me. The folder is called “6-1 or 6-2 Concours d’art oratoire.” If you have not already downloaded the OneDrive app to your device, please do so. It is quite simple to use. When you upload your video, it may take a LONG TIME to upload the video because of its length. Please be very patient. It may take several attempts. *Note: If your child was at school last Thursday and delivered their speech in front of the class, he/she does not need to make a video.

COSTUME DU PERSONNAGE: Students spent the month of March reading a French novel of their choice. They can finish reading it this week if needed. Earlier this month, they had been assigned “Un costume du personnage.” The costume should be simple, nothing overly ambitious is needed here. It should reflect a character from their book. Students will take a photo of them in their costume and holding their book if possible. They will email it to me from their student email account. In their email they can type a French paragraph to me with the following information:

  • Book title and author
  • A short plot summary of the book
  • A short description of their costume: who they are dressed up as, how they assembled/made this costume, etc.

*Note: if you do not have adequate supplies at home to put together a costume, you can design one by making a drawing and emailing me that instead 🙂

DUE DATES: Please finish both of these assignments by the end of the day Thursday. I plan to spend Friday watching the speech videos and reading the email assignments. Merci!

If you are looking for extra assignments for français class, please refer to your “J’ai fini” booklet and choose an activity (or more) from there! Students brought this booklet home last week. There are lots of different activities to choose from.

Lit. circles #4

Hello 6-1!

How is everyone doing that is currently at home? We miss you already. We don’t have enough students here today to do our lit. circles meeting, so we will blog our responses online instead! After you have finished your reading and role for section #4, you can type it on your blog for your group members to read. You can also try to post a photo of your book cover by browsing on Google images. Finally, find the blogs of your group members and comment on their work in the comment section below (a star, a wish, a question). Please try to accomplish this task by Friday, March 20th.

*As an example of the finished work I am asking for, please refer to dablogguy, MY BLOG or The Doggy Blog. You can access their blogs on the top left hand corner of the screen. There is a menu bar there.

Hé ho!

February is an important month for Manitoba to celebrate its Indigenous, Métis, and Francophone history. Festival du Voyageur is a wonderful event to help us celebrate. In class, we have been listening to some traditional French Canadian tunes to get us in the spirit. Enjoy!

French Home Reading

French Home Reading started for 6-1 and 6-2 at the beginning of October. Students are asked to read in French at home 3-4 times per week. A 15-20 minute reading session is a good length to practice and build skills. Students may borrow books from my classroom and/or the school library. There are many varieties of texts available for them to read: beginner/intermediate/challenging novels, non-fiction books, comics, graphic novels, picture books, the list goes on! It is the student’s responsibility to bring home adequate reading materials each week. Classes will visit the library once per cycle. Students can borrow books from the classroom bookshelf before the morning announcements or during class reading time. Please be sure to ask me, Mme McCarthy, or a librarian for book recommendations if you need to find a good fit book!

Helpful tips and expectations: log your reading in your Home Reading duotang calendar by writing the book title, author, genre and number of minutes. Each week, ask a parent to sign off on your reading in the signature column. Remember to hand in your duotang each week to Mme Péloquin: Mondays for 6-1 and Tuesdays for 6-2. Each month, you will be assigned a book project. Pay close attention to the handouts in your duotang as the projects will change each month throughout the year!

Parents: if you are wanting to support your child’s French reading at home, ask him/her to give you a re-tell after his/her reading session. This is a good way to do a comprehension check. You can also ask your child to tell you what he/she likes or dislikes about the book. You may also want to consider venturing down to the St. Boniface Public Library on a weekend for a large selection of French books! It would make a fun family outing.

GET CAUGHT READING! BONNE LECTURE MES AMIS!

*6-1 students will also read in English at home as part of our ELA. This means, they should be reading daily, alternating languages. There will be a separate ELA book project each month in addition to the French one!

Bienvenue!

Welcome students and parents to the 2019-2020 school year!

I hope everyone had a wonderful, restful summer break.
